After receiving the UBC Family Medicine Initiative Grant, AYAAF was able to host an educational workshop on hypertension. This interactive workshop included discussion on prevention, management, lifestyle modification, exercise and resources for additional support within our local community.

We were able to motivate joint participation from youth and parents with hypertension to encourage deeper understanding with small group sessions if patients sharing their medical journey. Hypertension prevalence rates are high within this community and as such require on-going education in management and prevention. One of my major concerns is regarding the traditional diet which has cultural and religious implications as a barrier to a healthy diet.

The goal of this session was to encourage a deeper understanding of of pathophysiology, symptoms and long term complications of hypertension and empower youth with the knowledge required to take control of their own health and advocate for themselves moving forward.
